Storage Systems, Policies, and Storage Location Assignment

Translate item velocity and handling effort into defensible storage-policy and slotting decisions.

A storage grid where fast-moving products occupy the closest locations to input and output.

Decision levelTactical storage configuration

Core modelStorage-location assignment problem

Which product should occupy which location when travel, space, and demand all matter?

This module moves from choosing storage systems to configuring how inventory uses them. You will compare dedicated and shared policies, connect product velocity to handling effort, and formulate slotting as an explicit assignment decision that can be revisited when demand changes.

By the end of this module, you can

  • compare storage-system and storage-policy alternatives;
  • explain dedicated, randomized, class-based, and closest-open-location logic;
  • formulate a storage-location assignment problem;
  • connect product velocity, travel distance, and handling cost; and
  • assess how demand change affects an existing slotting plan.
